Listening With the Whole Body

Listening plays a vital role in the sensory integration process. In fact, some believe that the auditory system is the ‘missing link’ in sensory integration modalities. Both research and clinical experience have shown that using sound-based interventions for clients with sensory processing difficulties can increase treatment effectiveness.

In this two-day workshop, you will learn to use Therapeutic Listening® Modulated CDs to create individualized, home-based programs for clients. You will also learn how to implement Therapeutic Listening strategies in conjunction with postural, respiratory, and sensory activities. The course will take you through all of the steps--from assessment to outcomes--for creating complete Therapeutic Listening programs. Video case presentations will be used to illustrate points and show changes in individuals with listening and other sensory processing difficulties.

This workshop will be especially meaningful for practitioners who have a background in sensory integration, including therapists in schools, hospitals, and private clinics. This course provides 12 contact hours or 1.2 AOTA CEUs, and provides participants with the necessary background information to begin using Therapeutic Listening right away. Specialized headphones and CDs are necessary and are available for purchase upon completion of the course. Faculty: Sheila M. Frick, OTR, Lynette Burke, OTR, Sharron Donnelly, MS/OTR, Lindy Joffe, MS/OTR, and/or Rita Montez, MS/OTR. 1.2 CEUs available from AOTA.

Advanced Listening With the Whole Body

As Therapeutic Listening® has continued to expand, we have kept true to our focus on creating cutting edge clinical treatment approaches. Advanced Listening With the Whole Body debuts a new series of therapeutically enhanced CDs, called Fine Tuning CDs. Fine Tuning helps to refine sensory modulation/discrimination abilities particularly in the auditory and vestibular systems. We’ll also cover other sound-based interventions, including Spatial Enhancement and Gearshifters. Our new CDs will be presented in tandem with carefully designed programs to support emergent skills across multiple domains. These programs are appropriate for clients across the age spectrum with sensory integrative, developmental, and learning challenges.

This course will complement your current Therapeutic Listening programs and allow further access to higher level skills using the Fine-Tuning, Gearshifter™, and Spatial Enhancement™ CDs. For maximum benefit to the participant, prior completion of our initial course, Listening With the Whole Body, is required. It is also recommended that you have prior experience implementing Therapeutic Listening protocols, and have practiced for a minimum of six months with a clientele of 10 or more.

This course provides 12 contact hours, or 1.2 AOTA CEUs. A certificate of completion allows purchase of treatment discs for use in homes, schools, and clinics. Faculty: Sheila M. Frick, OTR.

Vestibular Habilitation from the Core

Vestibular enhancement has been central to sensory integration (SI) theory and intervention since its inception by Dr. A. Jean Ayres. However, precise vestibular activation that is integrated with specific sound and vision tools and strategies is only beginning to be incorporated in mainstream SI clinical practice. This workshop is designed to expand the therapist’s clinical reasoning, assessment, and intervention skills through enhanced understanding of the interaction within the vestibular-auditory-visual triad.

Multiple frames of reference will be incorporated, including physical, emotional, social, and cognitive perspectives at each developmental stage. Key structural and functional aspects of neuroanatomy and biochemistry will be reviewed as a foundation for developing competency in specific intervention strategies. The Sound Activated Vestibular-Visual Protocol will be presented along with guidelines for safe, effective utilization as part of a comprehensive intervention program with clients of all ages and diagnoses. Faculty: Sheila M. Frick, OTR, and Mary J. Kawar, MS, OTR. 1.2 CEUs available from AOTA or ASHA. Registration fee includes the cost of course materials, including Astronaut Training: A Sound Activated Vestibular-Visual Protocol (Handbook & Companion CD, $39 value).
