Therapeutic Listening: Listening With the Whole Body

Two-Day Live Workshop

Listening plays a vital role in the sensory integration process. In fact, some believe that the auditory system is the ‘missing link’ in sensory integration modalities. Both research and clinical experience have shown that using sound-based interventions for clients with sensory processing difficulties can increase treatment effectiveness.

In this live two-day workshop, you will learn to use Therapeutic Listening® modulated music selections to create individualized, home-based protocols for clients. You will also learn how to implement Therapeutic Listening strategies in conjunction with postural, respiratory, and sensory activities. The course will take you through all of the steps--from assessment to outcomes--for creating complete Therapeutic Listening protocols. Video case presentations will be used to illustrate key principals and show changes in individuals with listening and other sensory processing difficulties.

This course will explore the in-depth theoretical information regarding the therapeutic use of sound ranging from its connection to sensory processing and sensory integrative function, and the neuroanatomical and neurophysiologic rationale for the use of listening therapies. Additionally, participants will further examine the principals of using sound as a tool in sensory integration.

Participants will learn evaluation techniques consisting of standardized assessments, clinical observations, and clinical interviews, which are the foundation for the development of an individualized Therapeutic Listening® protocol.

This workshop will be especially meaningful for practitioners who have a background in sensory integration, including therapists in schools, hospitals, and private clinics. This course provides 12 contact hours or 1.2 AOTA CEUs, and provides participants with the necessary background information to begin using Therapeutic Listening right away. Specialized headphones and music selections are necessary and are available for purchase upon completion of the course. Faculty: Sheila M. Frick, OTR, Lynette Burke, OTR, Sharron Donnelly, MS/OTR, Lindy Joffe, MS/OTR, and/or Rita Montez, MS/OTR. 1.2 CEUs available from AOTA.

Therapeutic Listening: Practical Integration into Home, School, and Therapeutic Settings

Combined Online Training and One-Day Live Workshop

Listening plays a vital role in the sensory integration process. In fact, some believe that the auditory system is the ‘missing link’ in sensory integration modalities. Both research and clinical experience have shown that using sound-based interventions for clients with sensory processing difficulties can increase treatment effectiveness.

Therapeutic Listening ® is not a pre-set program, it is founded in a clinical reasoning model that guides practitioners to select the appropriate music and modulation to match the client’s needs.  In this combined online and one-day live workshop, you will learn to use Therapeutic Listening® modulated music albums to create individualized, home- and school-based programs for clients.  The online training will include a combination of video and audio lectures taught by Sheila M. Frick, OTR and Julia Wilbarger, PhD., OTR on the introduction to Therapeutic Listening® and the neuroscientific rational for use of Therapeutic Listening®.

The one-day live practical workshop will focus on the clinical application of Therapeutic Listening® in the context of multiple video case studies with diagnosis ranging from Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, sensory processing disorder, and learning disabilities. This practical application course will guide practitioners how to use information from the initial assessment and the individual’s response to the music for ongoing development of individualized Therapeutic Listening® protocols.  Participants will learn how to select the appropriate music selections based upon individual characteristics of each client and develop an ongoing program.  The course will explore a variety of home and classroom programming suggestions that address the integration of listening with vestibular, postural, ocular dysfunction; sensory modulation dysfunction and integration into a sensory diet; and how to facilitate further development of audition and listening skills.

This workshop will be particularly significant for practitioners who have a background in sensory integration, including therapists in schools, hospitals, and private clinics.  Also, this workshop is recommended for practitioners who have already taken a Therapeutic Listening: Listening with the Whole Body course who would like a practical review or for practitioners would like to explore clinical reasoning in depth. This course provides 6 contact hours or 0.6 AOTA CEUs and provides participants with the necessary background information to begin using Therapeutic Listening right away. Specialized headphones and music selections are necessary and are available for purchase upon completion of the course at the live workshop.
